Welcome to the my stop on the #ElevatorPitch blog tour!! I’m absolutely delighted to share my thoughts with you. I had noticed a lot of Linwood Barclay’s previous work on the bookshelves of other like-minded readers so after hearing about his newest title I was so pleased to be able to join the blog tour! The synopsis absolutely drew me in almost instantly, and I don’t think I was quite ready for what was to come.. Here’s my thoughts:
Elevator Pitch – Linwood Barclay
Format – Hardback (ARC – 453 pages)
Publisher – HQ
Release Date – 5th September 2019
It all begins on a Monday, when four people board an elevator in a Manhattan office tower. Each presses a button for their floor, but the elevator proceeds, non-stop, to the top. Once there, it stops for a few seconds, and then plummets.
Right to the bottom of the shaft.
It appears to be a horrific, random tragedy. But then, on Tuesday, it happens again, in a different Manhattan skyscraper. And when Wednesday brings yet another high-rise catastrophe, one of the most vertical cities in the world – and the nation’s capital of media, finance, and entertainment – is plunged into chaos.
Clearly, this is anything but random. This is a cold, calculated bid to terrorize the city. And it’s working. Fearing for their lives, thousands of men and women working in offices across the city refuse leave their homes. Commerce has slowed to a trickle. Emergency calls to the top floors of apartment buildings go unanswered.
Who is behind this? What do these deadly acts of sabotage have to do with the fingerless body found on the High Line? Two seasoned New York detectives and a straight-shooting journalist must race against time to find the answers . . .
OK.. so if you didn’t already have an irrational fear of elevators, then you certainly will after having read this book! The premise behind the events unfolding in buildings across New York City got my heart racing with every drop! Initially the reader is led to believe this is just a tragic elevator accident, but as the days go on, my suspicions were raised to think there was more behind this than I first thought.
The title of book very cleverly links into the events within the first elevator to tragically take the lives of several people. Following this I was waiting on the edge of my seat to know when the next would be, but also more importantly – WHY?? I had so many questions, and I just couldn’t come to a sound conclusion about who, how, or why this was happening.
As Bourque and Delago seek to investigate who is responsible for these elevator malfunctions, I was gripped to also discover the truth with them. We are introduced to a number of personal stories throughout, however the impact of these tragedies is felt much wider across New York as the attacks call for action to protect civilians.
The Mayor and his associates are left to protect the city and be the face of the operation to the public, yet it feels as if he is being torn in different directions throughout! The book is extremely fast paced, reporting on the events across just a few days. The final chapters gave me drama, horror, and closure all at once which made this a very suspenseful read!
I can absolutely see this hitting the big screen, and the book itself is just marvelous!
I was really surprised by this novel, and I can now understand why Linwood Barclay’s work is so popular! I gave Elevator Pitch a five star review on Goodreads, and will be on the lookout for my next read!
